Aamir Khan recently sparked excitement among fans of Bollywood cult classics when he announced that a sequel to the iconic 1994 film Andaz Apna Apna was in the works. The actor, who played the beloved Amar in the original film opposite Salman Khan's Prem, shared this update during his birthday celebrations, hinting that both he and Salman would reunite on-screen for the much-awaited sequel. However, those hoping to see the classic duo back together may need to hold their excitement, as the children of the film's original producer, the late Vinay Kumar Sinha, have publicly refuted any such developments.
In a candid interview with Lehren Retro, Vinay Kumar Sinha's children — Priti Sinha, Amod Sinha, and Namrata Sinha — broke their silence on the matter and set the record straight. They clarified that while discussions about a sequel have been ongoing for years, neither Aamir Khan nor director Rajkumar Santoshi have been granted the rights to make the sequel.
“No Rights Sold to Aamir or Santoshi”
When asked directly whether Aamir Khan or Rajkumar Santoshi have any stakes or legal rights over the sequel to Andaz Apna Apna, the Sinha siblings were firm in their response.
“Aamir was never a producer of the film; he was just an actor,” said the family. “We will never sell the rights to him or Rajkumar Santoshi.”
They emphasized that their father, Vinay Kumar Sinha, was the sole producer of the original film and that all decisions regarding a sequel lie solely with the family now. “Yes, Aamir said Rajkumar Santoshi is writing Andaz Apna Apna 2, and we are very excited about it. But the fact remains that nothing has been finalized, nor have any rights been given.”
“It Was All Talk”
Delving into the history of the supposed sequel, Priti Sinha revealed that her father and Rajkumar Santoshi had indeed discussed continuing the legacy of Andaz Apna Apna for many years. However, despite countless meetings and verbal commitments, a sequel never materialized.
“In our father’s lifetime, for the longest time, Raj ji and Dad kept meeting and talking about a sequel. A contract was also about to happen. It went on for a long time that it was being written. Raj ji kept saying he was writing the sequel, but it never happened,” Priti shared.
She added, “Now only he (Santoshi) can answer why it didn’t happen during my dad’s lifetime. This was all set — that the sequel would be made, we’d produce it, and Rajkumar Santoshi would direct it.”
Producer’s Family Still Open but Cautious
When asked whether they would consider having Rajkumar Santoshi return as director for the sequel, Priti Sinha gave a diplomatic yet cautious response. “We are not sure. We haven’t decided yet. Everyone can say they are writing the film. But if the producers don’t announce the film, then it’s only talk.”
This statement underscores the Sinha family’s position: while they’re not entirely opposed to the idea of a sequel, they want to ensure that it’s made on their terms — with their family as the producers, just as their father had intended.
They also expressed a hope that if and when the sequel happens, Aamir and Santoshi would honor the commitment made to Vinay Kumar Sinha and include his children in the project.
Aamir Khan’s Birthday Statement Sparks Buzz
The whole controversy erupted after Aamir Khan, during his 59th birthday celebration, gave a massive update about the sequel. Speaking to the media, he had said, “Yes, we are working on it. Rajkumar Santoshi is writing the script, and once it's ready, Salman and I will take it forward.”
This brief yet loaded statement immediately made headlines and sent fans into a frenzy, as Andaz Apna Apna has, over the decades, achieved cult status among Hindi film audiences. Known for its slapstick comedy, memorable characters like Crime Master Gogo and Teja, and iconic one-liners, the film has remained a fan favorite for nearly 30 years.
But as it turns out, Aamir’s statement may have been premature or, at the very least, lacking in clarity regarding the legal and production side of things.
A Classic in Legal Limbo?
The situation now raises important questions about intellectual property, creative rights, and how legacy films are handled when the original creators are no longer alive. The Sinha family's comments suggest that while the spirit of Andaz Apna Apna 2 lives on in conversations, no legal groundwork has been laid down yet — at least not with their consent.
With the producer's children clearly asserting their position, any efforts to move forward with the film without their involvement would likely face legal and ethical hurdles. Moreover, their statements also indicate a desire to preserve their father's legacy and ensure that any sequel is made with respect to his vision and contribution to Indian cinema.
What’s Next for Andaz Apna Apna 2?
At the moment, the sequel remains in uncertain territory. While Rajkumar Santoshi reportedly continues to work on the script, the Sinha family’s firm stance makes it clear that nothing can move forward without their green light. Whether they eventually come to an agreement with Aamir and Santoshi remains to be seen.
