The Enduring Allure of Stars in Cinema: Rahul Bose

The fascination with film stars continues to captivate audiences worldwide, and veteran actor Rahul Bose believes this is something that should persist. Known for his candid opinions and thoughtful insights, Bose recently shared his views on the ongoing distinction between commercial stars and arthouse actors. As someone who has witnessed the evolving dynamics of the film industry, Bose believes that while acting skills matter, it is often the star’s charisma that draws the audience.

Rahul Bose, who was recently seen in the web film Berlin, feels that stars possess a magnetic quality that transcends their performance. “A star is someone whom audiences have accepted, regardless of their acting skills,” he explains. For Bose, this acceptance creates an unshakable bond, where the star’s presence on screen can eclipse the significance of the script or role. Citing examples like Hollywood’s Tom Cruise, Bose points out that whether Cruise is playing a Vietnam War veteran or a fighter pilot, what truly captivates viewers is his undeniable charm, not just the role he’s portraying.

Bose, who has delivered stellar performances in films such as Shaurya (2008), Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), and Bulbbul (2020), understands the challenge of not being labeled a "star." For actors who aren’t seen as mainstream stars, drawing audiences solely by their name is often difficult. “There is an established spectrum in the industry. People may think, ‘Oh, this guy might not draw crowds by name alone, but he could do so with an interesting role,’” he explains.

In essence, Rahul Bose believes that while stardom may cast a long shadow over the industry, there is value in the work of actors who don’t hold that title. As audiences evolve, so does their appreciation for performers, even if it comes a little later. For Bose, this balance between stardom and talent is what keeps cinema dynamic and engaging, ensuring that both stars and actors can thrive in their own right.
